Remington 870 Tips & Tricks #9: Basic Take-Down & Reassembly:
Since I began this series, I’ve received a lot of requests for a video on take-down and reassembly of an 870. This isn’t something I had initially planned to cover; the 870 is a pretty simple design, and basic instructions are readily available. However, the owner’s manual leaves much to be desired, and even the better how-to videos I’ve come across only show the process for one type of 870.
So, I felt I could contribute by creating a more exhaustive disassembly guide that would explain and demonstrate each step in greater detail, cover all standard 870 models and configurations, give accurate part names, help new owners avoid the common mistakes and hang-ups that most people figure out the hard way, and pass along some helpful tips for making the process easier.
The end result was a fairly long video, so to make it more user-friendly, I’ve added DVD-style forward and back buttons in the bottom corners. If you have annotations turned on, you can use the back button to replay previous steps; and the forward button to skip past steps that you don’t need help with, or that don’t apply to you. This video will only cover basic take-down and re-assembly, not cleaning or lubrication, or more extensive disassembly. I’m planning future videos on those topics.
When taking apart your 870, you don’t have to do exactly what I do in this exact order, especially if you’re only doing a partial take-down. That said, the order I show here is intended to be as easy, safe, and convenient as possible for a full disassembly. If you’re new to the 870, this is how I would recommend proceeding your first time around.
This video is intended to cover all standard 870 models (and should be applicable to 870 clones as well) as they come from the factory. I’ll briefly touch on a few common accessories and how they affect the process, but I obviously can’t include every possible configuration of aftermarket add-ons. If you have a heavily-modified 870 built by someone else, refer to the instructions for your specific add-ons, or contact their manufacturers.
I’ll be referring to parts by their official names in this video, so you can refer to the diagrams and parts list in your owner’s manual and other Remington documentation. If your gun didn’t come with a manual, you can download a PDF version for free from Remington’s website:
