  • My lathe is now being reground! I shot some videos along the way there but my camera died and lost the files when I got home…. Maybe in 2 weeks I’ll get the video on YT! Meanwhile I’ve got some other work to do and decided to film some of it.

    Using my mill and a rotary table to mill some parts off 10mm thick 200x400mm aluminum plates.

    Next videos will be about TIG-welding aluminum.

    “FLYING BRIDGE” DESIGN FOR SIMULTANEOUS PROCESSING ON A STATIONARY INDEXING PLATE:
    Using pulsed 532nm small diameter micromachining technology this system precisely and cleanly drills micron sized holes in thicker metals. In this project we developed and introduced the first production grade system capable of achieving this task. This green micromachining technology has opened up some new capabilities not previously available in industry. To provide maximum speed and flexibility for the automation system TeoSys opted to develop a completely new, over head “flying bridge”, X and Y axes which also hold the objective system from above. The objective “dangles” from the inverted X/Y set of stages which move to drill the hole in the stationary part. The index plate MUST remain stationary because the other simultaneous processes of Part loading onto plate, precise measurement of hole diameter using the optical measurement system and part ejection must all occur during drilling and while all the parts are held completely still.
    The indexing (rotating) plate is also from Aerotech, Inc. and is contains the major simultaneous operations of receiving parts, drilling parts, measuring parts and in the rear, ejecting parts based on their measured values. All of these tasks are performed simultaneously making for a highly multitasking automation system. The software which controls the main indexing plate (one of three programmable controllers that make up the total system) is extremely powerful and other than the live video module, was developed by Dana Lee Church from scratch over a period of a year

    Unique to this approach is the system’s ability to move the laser objective and precision video microscope precisely anywhere in a 72 square inch area without distortion or speed detriment. The system uses two, sub-micron accurate, linear drive stages from Aerotech, Inc. This system is capable of tenth micron accuracy (yes that is 100nm, less than the wavelength of visible light!)

    OPTICAL HOLE DIAMETER MEASUREMENT SYSTEM (OFT):
    After 20 seconds into video there is a glimpse of the Optical Flow (diameter) measurement system.
    On the far right one can see the red reflecting off 45 degree turning mirror. This photo-diode shines a beam through a hole in the index plate that has been designed to fall directly beneath the area on the part where the hole was previously drilled with the green 532nm, frequency doubled Nd:YAG. The Optical Flow Tester should be more aptly named, the optical diameter tester as the red photodiode beam passes through the hole drilled on the part and the passed light is accumulated on a photodetector acting basically as a reverse light extinction sensor similar to the particle testers that we developed.

    New Optical Flow Tester Technology – The OFT was a grounds up, new development to produce a sub-micron capable measurement system which analyzes hole position, cross-sectional area and equivalent calibrated barometric flow (correlated from hole diameter based on calibration hole testing as required by customer) all within a few hundred milliseconds. More impressive is the reality that this low noise precision optical instrument accomplishes these tasks in the high noise, high EMF, moderate vibration environment of a production automation system. By itself the OFT is a significant and unique development. Improvements in the indexing plate design and OFT optics have been measured to achieve better than 0.5um accuracy. 
    Machine vision was not an option at the time due to lack of computing power and the machine vision sample, calculation and correlation to user units was time prohibitive. The OFT can calculate the diameter in under 300 milliseconds for 0.5 micron accuracy and 0.1um repeatability.
