This tutorial introduces two types of fiber optic splicing methods – mechanical splicing and fusion splicing. You will learn the difference and each method’s pros and cons.
Hi, this is Colin. Welcome to this tutorial!
In this video, I will introduce two types of fiber optic splicing and how to do these two types of splicing.
What is fiber optic splicing exactly?
Fiber splicing is the process to join two optical fibers together, so the light can pass through from one fiber to the other.
There are two types of fiber splicing, both can accomplish the task.
The first type is called Mechanical Fiber Splicing as shown at the left, the second type is called fusion splicing, as shown at the right.
Let’s look at the mechanical splicing first.
Mechanical fiber splicing is just a mechanical alignment device. This device holds these two fibers and precisely aligns them, so that light can pass from one fiber to the other fiber with minimum loss.
These two fibers are still two separate, individual fibers. Their end faces are just precisely touched together, with some index matching gel in between. They DO NOT become one single continuous fiber. This is the biggest difference from the fusion splicing process.
Mechanical fiber splicing DOES NOT need any expensive machines, but they may need some simple assembly tools.
Now let’s look at the fusion splicing process as shown at the right.
You need an expensive machine, called fusion splicer, to do a fiber fusion splicing.
The splicing machine aligns the fibers precisely and then fuse or weld the fibers together with an electric arc.
These two fibers become one continuous single fiber once they are fused together. This is the biggest difference from mechanical splicing.
Now let’s look at a video of mechanical splicing process.
Now let’s look at a video of fusion splicing process.
So there you have it.
