In this talk, I will discuss our recent progress and research activity in the field of metamaterials, nanoantennas and plasmonics, covering a wide range of topics, from theoretical approaches to model the anomalous wave propagation and interaction with metamaterials, to various applications at optical frequencies, including enhanced nonlinearities, artificial optical magnetism, sensing, radiation patterning, energy funneling and harvesting. I will discuss our most recent experimental results involving lithographically printed and AFM assembled metamaterial nanostructures, including the concept of magnetic-based Fano resonances in nanoclusters and enhanced artificial magnetism and chirality in properly tailored nanostructured metamaterials. I will also discuss our recent advances in the area of metamaterial cloaking and invisibility, including the first experimental realization of a metamaterial cloak for a 3D free-standing object and our theoretical results on the general limitations of cloaking using passive materials. Physical insights into all these exotic phenomena will be discussed during my talk.
Andrea Alù is an assistant prrofessor at the University of Texas, Austin. He received Laurea, M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Roma Tre in Roma, Italy, respectively in 2001, 2003 and 2007. From 2002 to 2008, he periodical worked at the University of Pennsylvania, where he developed significant parts of his Ph.D. and postgraduate research. After spending one year as a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Pennsylvania, in 2009 he joined the faculty of the University of Texas at Austin, where he is a member of the Applied Research Laboratories and the Wireless Networking and Communications groups.
He is the co-author of over 180 journal papers and 20 book chapters, with over 3,900 citations to date (h-index 28, ISI WoS). He has organized and chaired various special sessions in international symposia and conferences, and he is the current program committee chair for the 2013 Metamaterials conference. His research interests span a broad range, including metamaterials and plasmonics, electromangetics, optics and photonics, scattering, cloaking and transparency, acoustic and quantum metamaterials, nanocircuits and nanostructures modeling, miniaturized antennas and nanoantennas, RF antennas and circuits.
Alù is currently an associate editor of the following journals: IEEE Antennas and Wireless Propagation Letters, Optics Express, Nanophotonics and Advanced Electromagnetics. He has guest-edited special issues in the IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics, in Optics Communications, in Photonics and Nanostructures: Fundamentals and Applications and in Sensors on a variety of topics involving metamaterials, plasmonics, optics and electromagnetic theory. Over the last few years, he has received several research awards, including the 2011 URSI Issac Koga Gold Medal, the 2012 SPIE Early Career Investigator Award, a 2010 NSF CAREER award, the 2010 AFOSR Young Investigator Award and the 2011 DTRA Young Investigator Award, the 2008 Leopold B. Felsen Award for Excellence in Electrodynamics, a 2005 Young Scientist Award from URSI General Assembly, and Young Scientist Awards from URSI Commission B in 2010, 2007 and 2004. His students have also received several awards, including student paper awards at the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Symposia (in 2011 to Y. Zhao, in 2012 to J. Soric). He has been serving as an OSA traveling lecturer since 2010 and as the IEEE joint AP-S and MTT-S chapter chair for Central Texas.
