Yes! We have a laser cutter! I’ve been yearning for one of these since I was a teenager, but they’ve always been phenominally expensive. Nowadays, they’re not. At least not the cheap Chinese 40 watt ones from Ebay. They come with excrutiating instructions and basically they simply may or may not work.
I thought for a while that I would have to use this one as a rabbit hutch or a propagator because it was one of the Not Working ones. The software was corrupt and whenever I turned it on, all the fuses in the house tripped. But another copy of the software arrived (thanks Bill!) and I found that if I power things up in just the right sequence I could avoid the tripping.
In this video I’m experimenting with things which might possibly sell in the craftshop? Any (polite!) suggestions gratefully received. I am trying another project too, with this machine, which will be revealed shortly..
Ok, yes, I know I should be using the extractor fan – and I will if I cut more of the thick card, but I’ve only cut a few things out so far and those were mostly in paper which is much less smokey.
Too many exciting things to do now, I don’t know which to do first. Including the doughnut cart project, which has been on hold since this machine arrived. And there is so much to do in the garden…
In case it helps: this laser cutter was advertised to work with Corel – which is a programme I happen to know. It came with an add-on programme called CorelLASER. I don’t know how thick it will cut, because there are all sorts of options to explore – speed and power mostly. The card in this example is maybe 1.5 mm (1/16th) thick. It cut fine at 26% of the power available. Paper cuts at about 3% – and bursts into flame spectacularly at much more!
The bugs seem only to be in the software – sometimes it doesn’t know where to start, or it sets off in the wrong direction, or it gets muddled if I’ve messed with the image too much (better to save, re-open the file and then print.) The machine itself is brilliant and seems to work well, though it will hardly do more than an A4 size sheet.
Vectors are dots joined by lines, I think, whereas bitmaps are pixels(?) and aren’t necessarily connected to their neighbours.
The sequence I use to convert files goes like this:
1. Export the CorelPAINT image as a .jpg file
2. Open the .jpg in CorelTRACE
3. Convert it to Black-and-White
4. Trace by outline
5. Save as a .CMX file
6. Copy and paste into CorelDRAW
7. Use CorelLASER to send to the laser
P.S. Yearning now for a 10’x5’ waterjet machine if anyone’s feeling generous.. : – )

If you had five minutes on stage what would you say? What if you only got 20 slides and they rotated automatically after 15 seconds? Around the world geeks have been putting together Ignite nights to show their answers. With our 12th session of Ignite Portland here are the speakers and their wonderful presentations at the Hollywood Theater held on Thursday November 14th, 2013, in Portland, Oregon.
