FANUC America Authorized System Integrator Matrix Design developed this multi-robot system for machine tending and deburring of transmission components.
Since the system utilizes four FANUC robots we will number each robot as R1, 2, 3 and 4. The system starts as an operator loads a cart of raw parts into the empty bay. Then, a FANUC M-20iA robot – R3 – uses its gripper to pick a tray of the raw parts. The robot presents the tray to a scanner, and the scanner reads the tray tag for identification and to verify the upstream operations have been completed. The robot then places the tray in a photo station where a camera checks for part errors.
The next robot in the process – R1, another FANUC LR Mate M-10iA robot – picks a raw part and places it on a transfer station, where a top-mounted FANUC LR Mate 200iD robot – R2 – awaits to pick the raw part and load it into the machine tool. Before loading the raw part, the FANUC LR Mate picks the machined part. It then transfers the machined part back to the transfer station, where a second LR Mate 200iD robot – R1 – picks the machined part from the transfer station and places it on the deburr system shuttle. The shuttle slides into the deburr station, where a FANUC M-3iA Delta-style robot – R4 – picks the machined part from the shuttle, re-grips it, then rotates the part around an inner diameter abrasive disk for deburring. Once abrasive deburring is complete, the FANUC M-3iA robot moves the part to a brush where inner and outer diameter brush deburring is performed. Matrix’s custom designed deburring spindle ensure all dimensional and quality requirements are met. Additionally, deburr tool monitoring are integrated into the entire system to minimize downtime. Once all deburring is complete, the FANUC M-3iA robot places the finished part on the shuttle.
Our R1, FANUC LR Mate 200iD robot again loads a raw part, and then picks our deburred part from the shuttle and places it on a finished parts tray. Our FANUC M-10iA robot – R3 – uses its scanner to read the tray tag for traceability, then places the finished tray onto a cart of finished part trays. Once a finished parts cart is full, an automatic bay hood slides into position to allow for operator unload. This automatic bay hood is also used for loading raw parts. Matrix’s cart-bay design allows the system to run uninterrupted while parts are loaded and unloaded.
This incredibly intuitive, extremely efficient machining and deburring system from Matrix Design has effectively maximized their customer’s productivity by increasing throughput to produce one deburred part every 18 seconds. The system saves cost for their customers as well, by reducing labor and producing a more consistent part. Additionally, the fully automated robotic system has reduced safety hazards associated with using a manual process.
